Dot in Extensions column

#1 Post by Scorpius » 16.02.2014, 17:24

Is there a way to hide the dot in the extensions column? It's pretty redundant and I think it shouldn't show the dot.

What I mean is instead of showing ".txt" it should show "txt".

There is this setting in the FreeCommander.ini file, but doesn't seem to do anything or I don't understand how it should work; if you change the value to 0, nothing happens:

Code: Select all

ShowExtensionWithDot=1

True. I tried it and I don't see any difference at all :(

I wonder what it is for.

Works only with the option "Right align extension for detail and list view" (Settings->File/folder list).

For "Right align extension for detail and list view" you must use own colors (deactivate "Use Windows colors").

And it works for you even in Details view? For me it works in List but not in Details view. In fact there is a bug (?) when there are files with "." in their names; the name gets "split" at the dot:

The file is named "TEST.tst.txt".

It works fine if there is no "Extension" column, though, with "Show extension in name column" option:

Not a deal breaker until you need to sort files by extension...

I'm amazed at how people use the file manager.

I always thought most people use file manager like I do: ALWAYS detailed list, and ALWAYS sorting by extension. I think it's the default of a file manager use.

Aligning the extension in the name column to the right is not what we want. I thought most people sorted by extension in a separate column...

Anyway it's not a deal breaker but it would be just nice that the extension column doesn't have the dot. In my opinion, it's redundant.

@Scorpius

You are wrong about extension alignement and dots in extensions.

As for me - ALWAYS use ONLY List view, right align extension and don't show dot. In such a way it was in Total Commander (which was used by me for a long time before FC XE). It is very convenient.

I think nobody is wrong or right, it's a matter of personal taste.
I allways prefer deteils view with extra extension-column.

Since release of FCXE public there were a lot of taste related topics here in forum and only a few related to functionality.

I think most people here are waiting for FTP and Layouts and not for unvisible dots in extensions column.

True about FTP most important than anything.

Anyway since you said this is just a matter of personal taste, here is how a real File Manager should look :P
