create Folders in Folder Favorites

#1 Post by b-sonic » 07.01.2012, 11:37

It would be great, if there was the possibility to create own subfolders in the folder favorites in order to organize the folder favorites better.

It should work like in every good browser. A good idea to integrate that better would be an entry Favorites in the menu bar.

This change should be easy to implement and I think it would be helpful for lots of people.

A similar approach is possible in the favorite toolbar (fC XE) by adding folders and ordering them by categories...

Or you can right-click on any button or toolbar area in the main toolbars at the top, and select "Customize favorite toolbars..." from the little context menu. That's how I do it. In a favouite toolbar, you create a "category" - which is like a folder, except that the "category" is a button. That sort of button will display a dropdown menu that you can add items to that work just like any other command. However, I am not sure whether you can create "subcategories" or not - I can't see how to do that, myself, and I suspect it isn't implemented.

Ok, this kind of works. But this functionality should be integrated in the "favorite folders" function. Just look at Internet Explorer, Firefox e.g. This would be more user friendly.

In addition to sub-folder type support in Folder Favorites (or) as an alternative, can we have separators in Folder favorites? It makes it easy for folders to be grouped together between separators.

You can make separators by adding favorites (e.g. C:\) named "--------------------".

Thanks ralfso, but using dashes is fine for one separator line. FC XE (R570) removes any additional instances. I have to create the separators with different counts of "-" in the "-----" string for separation.

My problem is that I have so much favorites that they don't fit into my screen. So that would not work for me. :(

Therefore I really need to have subfolders to organize them. This would be a really cool feature in the folder favorites, since I can select them via shortcut.

What is the benefit of so much favorites for folders?
I think it's the same if you click on a subfolder of your favorites or on a subfolder in the folder tree.

My main favorites are the locked tabs, from there I can reach all subfolders easily.

At work I've only network-folders defined in favorites to reach them faster.

Browser-favorites I've a lot, also categorized, but on HD or network I don't think that it makes clicking faster than in the tree or file window.

Actually, I would welcome the idea of subfolders in the menus of my "Favourite" toolbars. Right now you can create dropdown menus, but you can't create submenus there.

Since we can add a "folder" as an item in a menu, what if you could specify an option in the folder item to display its contents in a menu instead of opening the folder? Since FC has the ability to display folder contents in submenu within the breadcrumbs, would it be so hard to do it from a favourites item? This could be a nice feature.

Maybe for "Favourite Folders" there could be the same option - perhaps a checkbox to enable the use of the item to display its contents in submenus, or uncheck the box to use the menu item normally to open the specified folder in the panel. This would be nice too, and I, for one, would make good use of it.

At work, there are so much different and huge drives that I sometimes have to do 10 mouse clicks into 10 subfolders to reach a target folder. That's not efficient. So, I use the folder favorites to reach them faster.

ralfso, The option you mention doesn't consistently work for me. I need to edit the Freecommander.ini file. I notice that the separators disappear if I try to edit from the 'Favourite Folder - Edit'' option. Hopefully marek will support a cleaner way of separating groups of Favourites, and maybe also a Folderized option.
