Very Slow Startup

#1 Post by tdk1964 » 03.01.2012, 15:42

Hi,

I have downloaded the preview (FreeCommander XE 0.0.0.570 public preview) and found it very slow to start, often around 30 seconds.
My start-up panels are both local drives so it's not trying to access the network.

BTW: The original FreeCommander starts immediately.

Just thought I'd add some feedback ;)

Same here, not 30 seconds and mostly only the first time. I think I have reported it already, not sure if it was here.

XE629
there have been lots of improvements concerning startup-time all over the previous XE releases

but XE629 really feels speedy at startup - :P

Not so fast. I am having the same problem with XE650 .. 25-sec. load time vs. 3-sec for the 'old' version on WinXP. Is it caching icons or building a directory tree or something?

For me the x64 FCXE build 654 starts in less than 3 seconds.
Nothing to complain.

Please start a new topic in Bug reports forum, add more info, is it just the first time, or every time?

If you have donor access, try any version, newer than 652. Starting from 652, EXE file is not packed and start time increased significantly.

I can confirm the most recent public version (650) still has this issue. In my opinion this issue is not resolved.

I want to like FreeCommander_XE, but the long start-up time is just not acceptable. The previous version starts up instantly, while XE takes over 30-seconds. A little investigating shows that when starting, XE Reads (and pre-indexes?) all files and folders on the Desktop, including inside every ZIP and PDF file. It also Queries, Unlocks, Opens and Reads every URL link on the Desktop. This happens even though the Desktop is not one of the chosen folders to open at startup. I don't know what is done with this info; it doesn't appear to be written out to disk.

Is there any way to make XE start up without reading these files and folders on the Desktop? I see no performance penalty in the previous version when NOT pre-reading these things.

Results are with XE_2015.1.0.685. Going back to 2009.2.0.418 until this is (hopefully) resolved...

What is your Windows version? On my Win8/64 I see no difference in the start time (2 sec.) for both versions.
Is the tree panel active on start? Exists any tab with desktop (not only active)? Is each FC start slow or maybe only the first start after Windows start?
How have you made the investigation?
