To reproduce use [exift_Artist] in the name field.
I can reproduce it with some jpg, some mp3, some flac files (mp3 and flac should have diacritical marks, not sure about jpg files).
Just select few files to test and press F2, while [exift_Artist] is in the name field.
I know that exiftool is mainly for images, but artist worked for .flac in previous version, just some characters with diacritical marks were broken.

847 - Exiftool multi rename exception
Re: 847 - Exiftool multi rename exception
I have also experienced issues while viewing some files in quickview and then activating the exiftool metadata view.
It will cause the window "An error has occurred in the application" to pop up.
I have sent the bug reports to Marek. After taking a look at the files, I can't determine what could be causing the issue.
I am also experiencing an issue, where the application error window will not pop up, but inside the metadata window, exiftool shows an error that the file cannot be found. This happens with files that have special characters in their name,
for example:
watashi_no_konkurītomikisā_o_kiite_kudasai
or
bambro_koyo_ganda-arõma_reinterpretation
Best regards
