Can't create New Folder on MTP device

#1 Post by joby_toss » 12.04.2015, 10:56

I got my first smartphone a few days ago (Samsung Galaxy S4 mini) and I can't create a New Folder on it nor on its 8 GB SD card.

I can do it with windows explorer.
I have the official Samsung drivers installed.
I'm using FC XE x64 689 portable on windows 7 x64 sp1.
I can replicate this with the public 685 portable version using default settings.
MTP support was implemented in build 665 IIRC, so I'm not sure what's going on.

There is no New context menu (it's grayed out).

I get this error when I hit F7:

No problem for me but on Windows 8.1. I can create folders (F7) on my S4 mini.

Would be nice to know if anyone else can replicate this issue on windows 7... Maybe my drivers are not the best ones, so I might try something else (like this method, for example).

Confirmed on Win7 HP SP1, FC 689 x64, Samsung Galaxy S3, SD card and Phone memory, it works good in Explorer.

I think I have already reported these problems and some more, I almost forgot my smartphone uses MTP, since I use just wifi to transfer files between phone and PC.

EDIT: so these operations don't work either, tested with the JPG file:
- F4 to edit the file
- F3 to preview
- rename
- drag and drop to the toolbar icon (xnview)
- double click works, but the file is opened in the Windows Photo Viewer, not in the default program for JPG files (xnview)
- deleting the JPG file from card (using Del key, FC operation) causes freeze - FC is not responding (for about a minute), just the first time, second time nothing happened

These operations work good:
- right click and selecting "Open" opens the file in the correct default program (xnview)
- F5/F6 (FC operations)
- drag and drop between panels to copy/move
- deleting using the context menu works good

Reply for Free4all, please use the forum instead of PM:
Have you found a way to transfer files over WiFi between Windows and Android that does not lose the timestamp of each file?
MyPhoneExplorer portable for Windows and app for Android.

Thanks! I'll check it out.

To confirm, it maintains timestamps between Android and Windows? To date, I haven't been able to find an application that accomplishes that task.

Date/time created and modified is the same, if you mean this, of course also the EXIF date/time. Don't know if it's the same for all smartphones, tested with Samsung Galaxy S3 and Win 7 x64.

That's great news, thanks. I've spent many hours testing a variety of applications, and none of them preserve created and modified timestamps. The only way I've been able to accomplish that is through FTP. I'm looking forward to trying your recommendation. Thank you!

You're welcome. You can create the "file-sync jobs", then copy or move files with a single click. However, now I remember some issue with the new Android version, the problem with access to microSD card. It works good at least with Android 4.3 and should also with lower versions. (Sorry for OT)
