Selecting the double-period item in any folder displays the folder's size in the status bar. When the option to automatically compute file space used by folders is enabled, the value displayed is different than if it is disabled.

I think, it is always the sum off all size values in the pane.
Use Ctrl+A for checking it.

I tried pressing Ctrl+A this time. Still different values being reported.

Of course.
If the folder size option is not active only file sizes are available and '..' shows the size off all files.
If the folder size option is active, the '..' item shows the size of all files and folders in the pane.

That's what I thought too, but the values didn't seem to match that expectation.

I'm going to have to experiment with it a little more.

I had some subfolders when I was experimenting, but I thought they had several GB of contents, and the difference was only 0.5GB.

I'll play with it a little more when a have a few moments.
