I have never used the search function before, so tested it for the first time today.

I see there are options:

Run in external process......this seems self explanatory

Run in external process as admin... What difference does this option make ?

When I choose the "as admin" option, when I try and do a search the search window closes immediately.

There should come an UAC prompt asking to run with enhanced rights.
If this doesn't happen you have strange UAC settings or other rights releated problems.
Next time you report problems please add information about your versions of FC and OS
