Windows 10 - File Manager/Explorer Replacement (Instructions

#1 Post by heyscotg » 16.01.2017, 13:39

Hey there,
Can you outline steps to replace defaults "windows expolorer/file manager" actions to result in the opening of FreeCommander?

I would like any and every instance in Windows 10 that opens the default File Manager (don't know what they're actually calling it anymore,) to open with FreeCommander instead.

I've read a lot of threads on how to do with with Win 7, Menu » Tools » Redirect Win+E to FreeCommander. But alas, it's not working as expected in Win 10.

I'm not sure if you would do this, but offering a (Redirect=On) and a (Redirect=Off) .reg merge file would be very helpful.

Thanks.

Hey.

I am also want to integrate FreeCommander seemlessly into Windows 10 x64.
After searching the forum i have found reg files to archive this.
On my google drive you can download them: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4JpRM ... sp=sharing

It works really good but currently i have an issue with "control panel" (Systemsteuerung)!

When ill hit Win-Key and enter -> control panel -> control panel opens in FreeCommander XE -> good
Sadly, not every entry is working like it should, ex.: Energieoptionen (power options) just opens a folder with the icon.
Or "Program and features" shows up the installed programs but you cant uninstall them (there is no button).

Only workaround what i have found is to right click on the control panel item (ex.: program and features) and select "Open".
This Opens Explorer and the control panel item works as it should.

Did anyone know a better solution to integrate FreeCommander into windows (open all folder links in FC) but dont destroy control panel?

thx

If you use release 740 then you do not need change the registry self. Simply use Settings > Shell Menu.
Sadly, not every entry is working like it should, ex.: Energieoptionen (power options) just opens a folder with the icon.
I do not know what you mean. For me the Windows dialog for power options will be opened (same as from Windows Explorer).
Or "Program and features" shows up the installed programs but you cant uninstall them (there is no button).
You can uninstall the programm with double click.

Saw the option today, so registry changes are not needed any more :D
I have now checked Settings > Shell Menu -> Folder and the result is the same.
This is after i clicked on "power options":

I do not use the tree.
I open "control panel" simply in the laft pane.

ok, so i'll think ill figured it out.

When you click "Settings > Shell Menu -> Folder" and then save, FC adds the following in the registry:

Code: Select all

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Folder\shell\FreeCommander]
@="Open with FreeCommander"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Folder\shell\FreeCommander\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\FreeCommander XE\\FreeCommander.exe\" /C /L=\"%1\""
When i'll use windows searchbox for "power options" windows explorer opens.
FC added a shell (right click) menu entry "Open with FreeCommander".
But its not the default action for opening folders!
All is working as expected in FC, When ilL double click "power options" explorer opens it as usual.
The only downside is that, if ill click on an folder on desktop -> explorer pops up and not FC.
Also every item ill open with cortana searchbox opens with explorer.

When ill use my reg files from above, it also sets the default to FreeCommander:

Code: Select all

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Folder\shell]
@="FreeCommander"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Folder\shell\FreeCommander]
@="Open with FreeCommander"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Folder\shell\FreeCommander\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files\\FreeCommander XE\\FreeCommander.exe\" /C /L=\"%1\""

the difference is that the default value is set to FC.

Code: Select all

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Folder\shell]
@="FreeCommander"
In this case every opened folder (regardless if it was launched from desktop or cortana searchbox) opens FC -> good, that is what i want.

BUT, now the behaviour of some control panel options like "power options" behaves like my screenshot above.
Is there a way to tell FC always to open control panel entries with explorer.exe?

thx

Here is my solution for this issue: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=7746
Now FC is seamlessly integrated into windows
