Please support Descript.ion comments

Hi Marek

I am slowly converting from another file manager to FC XE. For most activities, XE offers as much or more functionality as the other tool, and I greatly prefer my custom XE panel layout (Tree-Files-Toolbar-Files-Tree). Thank you Marek, fantastic tool!

However...

I have been using the other tool for close to 20 years and have accumulated a large number of file comments in Descript.ion files scattered (one per folder) over many volumes. That other tool provides an interface to edit the file comments (storing them in the Descript.ion files) as well as a column in the file list to display these comments. The comments also participate in the search, filter, and rename dialogs.

Currently, I am unable use FC to view or change the Descript.ion comments.

This means I have to return to the other tool from FC to accomplish some of my routine file management.

Would you please consider providing a similar interface in FC? An ability to create new Descript.ion comments, edit old comments, display comments in the file lists, and use the comments in the search and filter tools would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for listening!

I prefer to use Descript.ion files for comments because of portability.

There are many problems with such comments (if to speak about amount of time required for development).

Comments could be stored not only in descript.ion files, but also in files.bbs and in BOTH types simultaneously in the same folder
Comments could be in DOS charset (encoding)
It is also necessary to provide ability to copy comments with files.

They were maintained in DOS Navigator (and its derivatives like DOS Navigator OSP) and in Total Commander under Windows.
But to be honest, such types of comment died with DOS.

At first glance, Timon's arguments against implementing this feature seem convincing, but FreeCommander offers no alternative method of file labeling/commenting/viewing same.

The different methods Timon lists have been prevalent for years. Why not employ one of them? Or perhaps consider an interface into NTFS file streams?

In any case, I really miss this capability in FC. Not having it slows me down.

Please offer us some method of entering user comments for files.

Is in FreeCommander roadmap the implementation of Descript.ion comments, or any other way to comment files/folders?
Thanks for info,
Cadu_

Hi there,
I am looking also for this function. I've been looking for it since a long time. so, if it is possible to implement a comment-function I would be happier with this amazing file manager.

This would be a great feature for the best file manger ever.
Hint: As long as FreeCommander doesn't support this you can use "Nexus file" or "FAR-Manager" beside FC to keep and edit your descriptions.

ACDSee and other programs use descript.ion to this day.
JPSoft Takecommand is not dead and a extended command interpreter is in normal use.
In Totalcommander you can use Files.bbs or Descript.ion.
Freecommander is a good program but with no support for a extended commandinterpreter and no support for comments it is crippled.
