"alt" is driving me nuts. Is it possible to remove

I am using "alt" key alot during the day. And naturally this usage ends up accidental directory changes in FC. It looks like in FC if you press alt and click in empty space it makes inactive space(other side) same folder. I personally hate this behaviour. I digged through the pref and I could not see any option. Is it possible to change this behaviour? I can see the benefit but it is not my thing really.
