2D or 3D file directory array view

I have a burning need to arrange and view file directories in a 2D and sometimes 3D array and was wondering if this is even possible. The way I need to organize files creates very redundant tree structures.

For example, one axis of directories might be by date (or time) and the other axis might be by location. The files in the date-location directory would only be relevant to that date and location.

The third dimension might be for something like person (or thing). I hope my description makes it clear what I'm asking.

Is this approach even possible? If so, is there anyone out there willing to give it a try.
