Thumbnail in file tips for images

#1 Post by Philip Goddard » 04.08.2009, 18:05

I came to FC just a few days ago, having got p****d off with two problems I was having with Powerdesk, which was otherwise the best file manager I'd found up to that time.

I now find that FC not only lacks those two problems but for my purposes is a whole lot better in all sorts of ways, so I'm really delighted and impressed - all the more so as it's not being offered as a commercial product. So, my congratulations to you, Marek, for producing such a fantastic program, which is by far the best file manager (i.e., for my purposes) that I've yet come across - and I've tried out a fair number. I've now kicked Powerdesk and other trial file managers off my system, and am staying with FC for the foreseeable future.

There is one Powerdesk feature that I did find very useful, which I don't find in FC, and that is the inclusion of a reasonable-sized thumbnail image in the file tip for any image file. I guess it would best be a user option if it were to be included in FC, for it could slow things down significantly on some systems. I myself keep a 'details' view as my file manager default, so the thumbnails in file tips are really useful, whereas when I want to work with an overall thumbnail view of a folder's contents I go to XnView.

Also, as has been mentioned or at least implied elsewhere on this forum, it would be nice to have an FC option to make itself the Windows (including Vista and Win7) default file manager, rather than the user having to do risky things in the registry to achieve that.

Anyway, thank you for all the good work you're doing there, Marek!

Try XNView shell extension until then.

Oh sure, thank you, I had that installed pretty well as soon as I started using XnView. It does give a thumbnail in the right-click context menu for image files, but that's very different from just being able to run your mouse pointer over files in the file manager list and having the file tips with thumbnail pop up quickly.
