609 - Column layout is automatically resetted
609 - Column layout is automatically resetted
Steps to reproduce:
- I open a directory and broaden the column for the file name.
- After I delete a file, the column size is automatically resetted.
This also happens when I create a directory or a file.

As I recall, there has been some discussion about this elsewhere on the forum, but I don't have time to look for it now. You might try Settings > Custom Columns. Select the custom view you are using, then click on the Define Columns button. Try enabling or disabling the Autosize For "Name" Column. Let us know if that solves your problem.
Re: 609 - Column layout is automatically resetted
Thx!
I realized that this is a feature, not a bug. The default value for the name column was 40 and autosize was enabled. I simply changed it to 0 and now get the column autosized that I can see the whole file name. Neat!
Though, I still think that the column shouldn´t be autosized when something happens inside the folder (like deleting a file). Autosize should happen when the user changes the folder. That´s just my opinion and surely not everyone will agree =)
I also don´t know where that value 40 comes from. If this is the default value after a fresh installation of FC, why not setting it to 0 and autosize enabled? Nowadays with big screens, this should be feasible for most users.

I set name column width to 0 and observed the following.larsen wrote:... I still think that the column shouldn´t be autosized when something happens inside the folder (like deleting a file). The column automatically resizes when:
- the view is refreshed, for example after switching to a different tab and back, or View > Refresh.
- a longer file name is added (file renamed, created, or pasted in). EDIT: This can be controlled by the Auto refresh settings in Settings > View > File/Folder List > Refresh.
Strangely, the column does not resize after a long name is changed to a shorter name (file renamed or deleted). So the behavior is a bit inconsistent.
My personal preference is for the column size to resize dynamically whenever the file list changes.

You could try changing Settings > View > File/Folder List > Refresh:larsen wrote:... Though, I still think that the column shouldn´t be autosized when something happens inside the folder (like deleting a file). Autosize should happen when the user changes the folder.
[ ] Auto refresh for general changes (create, delete, rename)
[ ] Auto refresh for other changes (size, date, attributes)
Re: 609 - Column layout is automatically resetted
Hmm... does this work for you?
Cause it doesn´t work for me: I have disabled both auto refresh settings (well, the second automatically gets disabled upon disabling the first), even restarted FC, and when I create or delete a directory, the column size is reset. Max column width is set to 0.

Re: 609 - Column layout is automatically resetted
larsen, I hadn't tested this when I suggested disabling the Auto refresh settings, but I have now at your prompting... and your are correct, the columns do indeed resize with the addition of either a file or folder with a longer name.
I assume that auto-resize is dependent on the auto-refresh setting -- that is, resize doesn't happen until the view is refreshed. I may be wrong on that. But if correct, then I think the auto-refresh control is not working properly.

Re: 609 - Column layout is automatically resetted
Should I create a bug report?
Re: 609 - Column layout is automatically resetted
I think that would be good. Either start a new post in the Beta Bug Reports section and include a link back to this string, or click on the red exclamation mark icon (Report this post) in your original post, select "Other" as the reason, and request the moderator to move the entire string to that section. Thanks.larsen wrote:Should I create a bug report?
