I like the functionality, but I also want to be able to click on the address bar to select a pane without having anything popping up.
The history button gives you the functionality, and maybe that's sufficient.

What about this option:
Settings > General > "Delete history entries on close"?
Not enough?
It's possible to hide the history on click in Settings > View > Address bar > General.
