Searched for files, how to save list of results

#1 Post by fcny » 12.09.2012, 01:47

From what I recall of the 2009.b (?) version, I could search for files, then export the results list to a plain text file. I often choose to do that so I can later manipulate the files returned from the search as I choose to.

I'm not sure how to do that in the FC XE version (0.0.0.591) I am using now.
Also ... can I save the results to a plain text file anywhere on my drive ?

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit.

Thanks

I don't see a way to do that in 598. However, I notice that the Folder menu in the main GUI has "Make file/folder list..." greyed out. I'm guessing that has not been implemented yet in FC-XE. When it is, it would be nice if the same function would work for Search results as well.

Do the search
Mark all files
Press ALT & INS (copy path to clipboard
In FC press CTRL & SHIFT & N (new textfile)
Open this file with ENTER
Paste the paths from clipboard
Save
Finished

When I ...

In FC press CTRL & SHIFT & N (new textfile)

a dialog opens. And what does that do ????????????????

I enter filename, press enter, the dialog closes. Over. Nothing.

You lost me at that point.

At this moment a new textfile with your entered name is created in active folder.
This file is also marked, so you only have to press enter to open the textfile in your editor.

There you can paste the pathes and save the textfile.

The process in short form:

Copy all pathes in search window with the FC-function "copy path to clipboard" (ALT & INS)
Open or create an empty textfile.
Past the pathes.

This certainly works, but as I understand fcny's original request, he would like a one-step process whereby the text file is created and automatically contains the selected paths. I don't remember how FC 2009x worked in this regard, but that's what he describes. And the greyed-out item "Make file/folder list..." in the Folder menu in the main GUI hints that this might be possible in a future version of FC-XE; it would certainly be appropriate as an action in the Search results as well.

You're right, but I think it's better to use this 5 seconds solution than to say:not possible, wait some month 'til the "save to file" function is implemented.

That's a good way to say it, ralfso, and absolutely correct. I just wanted to complete the loop by returning to fcny's original request. It's good you explained a solution for the meantime.

Any news about this missing functionality, i.e. "export to file" a search result?
The workaround works, but it saves just the file names. The "export to file" of FC2009 was exporting all the columns of the search.
It was a handy feauture.
Kind regards.

Sorry, I posted in the wrong section and beside I found the answer myself.
A file container in FC is just a text file and furthermore the file container toolbar provide that functionality.

Press ALT & INS (copy path to clipboard
In FC press CTRL & SHIFT & N (new textfile)
Open this file with ENTER
Paste the paths from clipboard

Does NOT "export" copy all the columns INFO. :(

I would like to export search results in same format with all columns included.

Thanks
