Multithreading in the panes

#1 Post by braykov » 03.08.2010, 13:29

FreeCommander is a modern and extremely useful, rich-feature app. Actually the best free out there in the windows world.
I am surprised it does not use multithreading when it reads/accesses folder content.
If I open remote folder, like ones on SharePoint or on other locations (path starting with "\\") it can be very slow.
Currently until the content is read and displayed the whole app is unusable. Acutally it is "Not responding".

I expect to be able to browse the other pane in that time.
I would also like it if I could somewhere just hit Cancel and stop waiting for the folder to be read/displayed.
I see it like this: when the path is changed and and a folder is to be read, the pane should become grey and frozen, meaning it shows the user that it is trying to reach the location. There could also be a semi-transparent area with a sign "Stop" or "Cancel" to make it stop.
This would be also very helpful the user presses CTRL+SHIFT+B and has to wait for a long time to see thousands of files in the flat view. I think you get the idea.

This would be all quite natural in a multi-threading app.
Do you plan to use similar approach/functionality in the next FC version?
What happened with "The future of FreeCommander"? There is no news for a long time.

Yes. In the current preview version the file operations runs in background. File loading will be threaded too.

Good answer. Thank you!
this means I have to just wait for another month.

I am curious what language, development environment you use for the new version.

I am developing an application that keeps track of list view and the preview pane. In essence, when a user clicks on a preview pane for registration must be populated List View record more. Each disc also has a variable number of images.
