Replace Windows Explorer in Windows 7?

#1 Post by Wiley » 01.04.2010, 00:31

Does anyone have any experience replacing Windows Explorer with Free Commander in Windows 7? I have seen the posts regarding the registry changes required for XP, but I'm hesitant to try those in Win7.

I just tested this with FreeCommander 2009.02a Build 413 donor and Windows 7.

FreeCommander Settings | Shell already create registry keys similar to what you've done if Drives and Folders are marked as shown:

If so, this registry script will take advantage of them:

Code: Select all

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
@="FreeCommander"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell]
@="FreeCommander"

The shell discussion in this forum I quite spread und unclear about exact windows version.
However I am wondering why the donor beta does not include the mentioned area:

Extras -> Settings... -> ShellMenu (this is just NOT there)
  • Which version do I need for this feature?
  • Is this a limitation of my Win732bit?
  • Can two versions be installed in parallel?
  • What about other possibilites?
A good command line switch would be also ok, but I found only one which is replacing an open tab. So the original tab is no longer there. That is not a real useful solution.
That is what I tested so far: /L="path" to pen in folder 1 (left pane) or /R="path" to open in folder 2 (right pane).

But nevertheless FC is awesome good!

Perfect combination with Notepad++ (www.notepad-plus-plus.org) and Everything (www.voidtools.com)
through implementation of new win protocol comm:///path/... to open new Freecommander tab.
