slow synchronization between a local and a network folder

#1 Post by Alain 38 » 28.08.2017, 22:21

Dear developer,

Synchronizing a local folder with a remote folder on my home network is much, much slower than just using the copy function.

Configuration :
- 2 PCs running Windons 7 Pro SP1 connected through a 1Gbit ethernet connection.
- FreeCommander XE 2017 Build 751 32-bit

Operations performed within Freecommander :
- Copying a 512MB file from my local drive A to my local drive B takes about 5 seconds (for an average speed of 100MB/s)
- Transfering the file with the Synchronize command takes about the same time (as expected).
- Copying the file from my local drive to a remote folder on the remote PC takes about 5 secondes (for an average speed of 100MB/s, thanks to the 1Gbit connection)
- Transfering the file with the Synchronize tool takes between 1minutes 45 seconds and 2 minutes !
The issue happens both when the remote folder is the source or the destination.

WHen using the AllwaySync app from Botkind, Inc to perform the synchronization of the local and remote folder, the 512MB file is transferred in about 5 seconds as expected.

Regards.

I have noticed the same problem. File sync across the network is much slower than copying a large file.

This has been a problem since File Sync was added to FCXE. I expect it may be related to keeping the progress bars updated.

I did not notice any slow down when syncing two local folders, compared to copying. So I doubt it is related to the progress bar update...

Of course there is little noticeable slowdown with local folders. Local folders are on FAST hard drives.

The issue is BIG FILES being synchronized over the NETWORK. In particular, folders with MANY BIG FILES.

A simple timing test with a stopwatch will prove the point.

the speed of file sync depends on the amount of your data. the more data you sync, the more time you will spend. if you do not mind using third-party tool, i would like recommend AOMEI Backupper for you. this software can sync(http://www.backup-utility.com/features/file-sync.html) your files in a very short time.

synchronization between a local and a network folder is now FAST

#6 Post by Zorkoff » 30.09.2017, 20:08

I have just completed a file backup using the Synchronize Folders function of Free Commander XE version 760 x64.

I am happy to see that the network performance has been greatly improved. What used to take 10 to 20 seconds to update now takes about 1 to 2 seconds. The first time I used Sync in version 760 it went so fast that the progress window did not have time to display. I thought there might have been a bug because the behavior was so different. Instead I am so happy that the synchronization is now as fast as the manual copy operation. Great Improvement!

Thank you very much Marek.

Just updated to the 64bit build 740 version but network performance is as slow as before with the 32it version.
Offcourse I am happy to donate for such a great program, but I hoped it would also solve the problem with the slow networking.

When copying a 2GB file using the explorer in FreeCommander it's as fast as it should; network goes easily to 98% on my 1GBit connection, BUT when using synchronise (alt-s) it drops to 3%.

Please help; I use synchronise for backup weekly...

... or try to use 760 public beta 32-bit (if you donated 4.50 EUR (ca. 5 USD) for “FreeCommander XE 2017 Build 740 64-bit donor” download)

Thanks for Replying Zorkoff & Timon.
It seems I have to pay again to get the latest update. This is quite disappointing since I did already pay hoping to solve the above mentioned problem.

Addendum:
Tried the 760 public beta 32 bit as mentioned by Timon. Problem solved!
I'm still disappointed about not getting updates for a paid version, and will think twice next time before donating.
Let there be no doubt, nevertheless: I still think Freecommander is a great piece of software!
