Tooltip Info for dbpoweramp - Bug? (650, 665)

#1 Post by ElliP5i509 » 08.08.2014, 00:20

Hi,

I only just found this awesome program a little over three weeks ago, and am thus, in the middle of exploring and customizing a number of features. Love how it's integrated into my workflow. However, one thing that's been bugging me--and I'm not entirely sure it constitutes a bug per se--is on the x64 platform: the lack of a full dbpoweramp tooltip.

FreeCommander XE 2014 (Portable Version) Build 650, W7 (Home Premium) SP1 x64

(Haven't found any recent mention of this issue on the forum, so this could also be a feature request?)

Nevertheless, when I run the non-portable version (in the same general, portable app directory) and use the default setup with only the tooltip item checked in Settings, the result is the same: the default, truncated tooltip blurb.

The full dbpoweramp tooltip shows up in W7's POS Windows Explorer, but that's not something I want open 24/7 and cluttering the screen for the sake of intermittent/quick file checks.

When I use the exact same settings of the same portable build on a WinXP SP3 x86 system, the detailed tooltip shows up without a hitch, i.e., normally, like it does in WinXP's Windows Explorer.

I'll be testing/using this same build and setup on a fresh W7 Ultimate SP1 x64 machine sometime in the next few days; the only things I'll be doing differently is testing the build prior to and post-installation of dbpoweramp. Not anticipating any relevant change--Home Premium has only given me endless, random headaches from day 1, but will update this post for posterity.

Many thanks for developing a great app!

Delayed update, but the same on five machines (2 XP and 3 W7); first with the stable version 650, and then 665. The only thing is that I haven't yet attempted a fresh installation of the application and slew of related codecs. But I'm guessing it's going to yield similar, i.e., unchanged, results.

At the very least, you should upgrade to the latest public beta, build 665.

Super delayed updates re: the 665 public beta build:

As expected, the tooltip still doesn't show up on the W7x64 Ultimate machine that has a newly installed dbpoweramp with codecs. (This is even running FCXE in as an admin with compatibility mode for Windows XP - SP3.)

However, on a brand-spankin' new W7x86 Ultimate system, the comprehensive dbpoweramp tooltip appears without any issue.

I'll post this somewhere in the Feature Requests shortly.

The public FC version is x86 version and it works OK on W7x86.
It is possible that FC x64 version works fine on W7x64.
Check if dbpoweramp has x86 and x64 versions and try to use x86 with FC x86.

From here: "For Windows 8, Windows 7, Vista and XP (SP3). Unicode capable, 64-bit compatible."
(More details on the version history here if curious.)

The only full version I have is very old and it wouldn't do to use it on the primary W7x64 machine since all of the current improvements/optimizations are essential. The most recent version of dbpoweramp installs both in the normal (x64) program files' directory and the x86 one as a default. (I had no idea it did this until post-installation.) The system seems to prefer the x64 version regardless of what's installed in the x86 location.

I suppose the only thing left to test now is the x64 version of FC XE!

Intriguing issue... so I've made a few tests, using dBpoweramp trial version on my win7x64 (it installed by default only in Program Files).

Files managers tested (using their default settings): FC XE x86 and x64 (both setup and portable latest donor versions), XYPlorer x86 (setup and portable trial versions, no x64 version available), TotalCommander x86 and x64 (setup trial versions), Q-Dir (x86 and x64, both setup and portable versions), Windows Explorer (x64 default installation).

dBpoweramp property handler tooltip displayed correctly only on Windows Explorer and Q-Dir x64 (both installed and portable versions).

However, I also tested my FC XE x64 6861 portable donor test version with my custom settings and it freakin' works! I have no idea (for now :) ) what setting is responsible, but I can definitely say that FC XE x64 is able to display that dBpoweramp tooltip on win7x64. My custom x86 version of FC XE does not display the tooltip, using almost identical settings.

EDIT: found it... (it's disabled by default)

P.S. I bet that FC XE x86 displays the dBpoweramp tooltip on windows x86 if that setting is enabled!

Yeah, the option is checked in my customized setup, so I already knew for certain that the FC XE x86 build displays the tooltip when it's running on an x86 system. (It just took a new system to confirm that the FC XE x86 builds work very well in both XP and W7 x86.)

I just don't yet have an x64 version of FC XE, but it looks like I might be donating sooner rather than later!

Thanks for running the sandboxed tests. :)
