Settings Location for FreeComm Public Portable Zip Version

#1 Post by Hermanson » 07.12.2015, 17:28

I've loaded portable FreeComm unto a special partition of my drive where I keep all my other portables, so I can take them with me.
They are truly portable and cannot get contaminated by issues with Windows.

However, the settings for FreeComm are still saved in C:/Documents and Settings, so they don't travel with me.

How can I change the settings location?

Your fcStart.ini file should look like this:

Code: Select all

[Start]
freeCommanderIniDir=%FcSrcPath%

Can you give me a bit more background to your response.

What is an fcstart ini file and what are the variables in the code/command?

You can change it also here...

BTW the location of important settings files is in main menu > help > about > paths info.

I did notice the location of the settings files reported in the "about" path.
But I missed the Start Program Settings on the Settings Page.
I see it now, but I do not have an fcstart.ini file in my "C:/.../AppData/FreeCommander" path.
I see the settings files but there is no "fcstart.ini" file, specifically.

I made a "Settings" folder under my FC install folder and selected that folder as the settings folder.
It seems to be working. So, although I do not understand exactly what I did, I have been successful thanks to Eastern European experts.

Thanks for your help, Joby and Dreamer.

Kind regards,

And when you download a new version, just make sure you get the portable zip package: stable or beta.

fcstart.ini is located in the FC install folder, editing this file is an alternative to GUI settings, so if you changed the location in settings, you don't need to edit the fcstart.ini file.

Curious. At first, the fcstart.ini file was not present in the FC folder.
Now that I have created a Setting folder and pointed the program to it, the fcstart.ini file shows up.

I'm not sure, but perhaps it's not needed if default path is used, I don't know because I use just portable versions, several at once.

Thanks for all you help.
