Make history work as in web browser style

I've been digging around but still can't seem to find a way to make the history work as it does in a web browser - in that once you go forward from a location you've backed into to a different folder forward it forgets/erases the old path. Right now it's like

A > B > C

back up to B

go down to D

history should now be A > B > D

But clicking back takes me to C instead of back up to B.

Going through a trip to all the alternate-forwards since I clicked down from B is kind of a pain. Is there a setting to make the history behave in a more browser-like fashion?
