How to acheive a fresh install ?

#1 Post by fcny » 31.10.2020, 01:07

I am using the latest version of FreeCommander, XE 2020 Build 810a 32-bit public, and it is deathly slow. I've given up trying to get help here to resolve it, so am instead seeking a means to totally uninstall it, in the hope I can re-install and start over - hopefully with a little faster operation.

I went through the Windows uninstal process, and then deleted everything in my various system folders that had "freecommander" in it, everything in the registry that had "freecommander" in it, etc, etc, etc.

I then re-install the latest version and .......... no change.

Again, I've been here for over 6 months asking for help to resolve it and I know that wont happen. So, I accept that the only path forward is to somehow uninstall it and start over, or .... get a different application.

I run "Windows 64 bit professional".

First you can check if some settings influences the speed of freecommander.

Start FC with default settings with this command line parameters:
"C:\path to FreeCommander.exe" /N /NewIni=Test.ini /NoPlugins

https://freecommander.com/fchelpxe/en/C ... eters.html

Or you can try the portable Version (FreeCommander XE 2020 Build 810a portable ZIP) with fresh setting at the bottom of:
https://freecommander.com/en/downloads-portable/

(unzip to a folder which isn't protected by windows e.g. C:\FCXE\)

First, download the latest version - FreeCommander XE 2020 Build 830 32-bit public beta.

You can try to install the portable version (830), default settings will be used:

FAQ – FreeCommander - How do I install the portable ZIP version?

BTW Which Windows version are you using?

Got a bit busy with the Virus ........

I as of this posting 8/08/21, I have tried BOTH the "portable" version and the "defaults" option and BOTH show the same symptoms.

After restarting my Windows 10 'Pro' ~2.8 GHz Intel i7 processor based PC, with one drive and NO network connections, the initial start up time is about 30 ... 40 seconds. By that I really do mean that I double click the desktop icon, and have to wait ~40 seconds before I can do ANY operation within FreeCommander.

I do not see this same issue with other programs I use ... IE: Chrome, Edge, Windows Explorer, Word, Notepad++, Excel, a few IDEs, etc.

I have tried deleting everything I can find having to do with FreeCommander in registry, every directory, .... re-installing, etc, etc .... nothing has
resolved this. I regularly experience this on BOTH my desktop PC, and Laptop. Both same version of Windows, both single FLASH hard drive.

I only started using my laptop almost every day about 10 months ago. At first FreeCommander would start relatively quickly .... now it's ~40 seconds.

Are you using the last 840 release?
What about the AV (Anti Virus or other monitoring software) program - if you are using one, try to deactivate it for testing.
Try to start without tree.
