Delay on startup
Delay on startup
Hello!
I've been a user of Clover for many years, and I'm now starting to look around for alternatives. I found FreeCommander which seems like a great little program, having all the bells and whistles I'm looking for. I'm just on the public release for now, and before jumping on the donor-release with 64-bit I want to check something with you guys.
When I start FreeCommander, it takes 15 seconds for the program to start/window to pop up. For me this is totally unacceptable for starters UNLESS that's a "built in feature" of the free public release. Then I can somewhat understand it. BUT, as I haven't found any documentation around this, I want to know if it will start more quickly if I jump on to the donor-version? If this 15-second delay is intentional in the public version, that's fine, and I'll happily donate to get rid of it in the 64-bit version. But if I do jump on to the donor-version, and STILL have a 15-second start-up time of the software, I will NOT be a happy customer...
Anyone able to help me with answering this?

Re: Delay on startup
No one can guarantee how quickly the program will start. It depends on many factors in your environment.
Re: Delay on startup
It's not normal.
It could be caused by: network path tabs, folder tree, desktop tab, desktop in folder tree, many favorite tools items (with custom icons, hundreds)...
You can try it with default settings, or close the tabs with network path, disable folder tree...

Re: Delay on startup
OK, I will try to disable folder-tree. I haven't added many things yet. Everything works great as soon as the program has started though, so I guess it's something I could live with somehow... I'll try your tweaks and let you know how it goes! Thank you for your input!
Re: Delay on startup
Please do, i have the same problem since this last public release and i haven't changed changed anything... my setup is basically at default settings and once it's opened, everything is fine.
Re: Delay on startup
Is it only at first start after PC start? If you exit FC and start it again, is it better?
Which tabs do you have opened? Try it with no tabs, no tree and non-Desktop, non-Computer path, use any drive as path (C: , D: - or any subfolders).

Re: Delay on startup
i have mine start up at bootup... takes about 15-20 seconds for it to start once windows 10 is loaded, after that, if i close freecommander and restart it, it's just fine. The same problem is on both my laptops
Everything is basically default and i don't even know what tabs are or if i'm using them, i just use it for the 2 panels.
I've tried a few other managers and there is no problem with startup.

Re: Delay on startup
Perhaps something else is loading too.
You can try to disable auto start with Windows, restart PC and wait few minutes, then start FC manually.

Re: Delay on startup
i can't find a setting in freecommander to turn off auto start when windows starts.
msconfig or task manager doesn't show freecommander under startup to disable

Re: Delay on startup
Strange, perhaps it's another tool...
When you shutdown pc, is it real shutdown, not sleep, hibernation or something else?
You can try e.g. Startup Control Panel (external program to manage startup programs).

Re: Delay on startup
it's a real shutdown, power light goes out
downloaded Startup Control Panel and no freecommander shown in any of the tabs
guess i'm going to have to live with this or do a complete new reinstall, which would be a real pain, you know where
thanks for your suggestions

Re: Delay on startup
Weird, if you mean Windows reinstall, I think it's not needed.
Try to backup FC settings, uninstall FC, download the portable version, unpack it to other folder/path as before, it should be non-Program files subfolder.
You can check also the programs in the startup list, some programs can start other programs, e.g. HotkeyP can start FC too.
Where you downloaded FC? Make sure you re-download it from the official site, just middle click the FC image in the top left corner.

Re: Delay on startup
i downloaded FC from here
went to the download page, but couldn't find a portable version, i was just going to rename the folder or move it to another drive and try what you suggested with the full version and see what happens.

Re: Delay on startup
i renamed the FC folders and did a fresh install of FC with no changes, rebooted and the fresh FC started about 20 seconds after windows was loaded
and no FC in the task manager - startup
wonder if there's a glitch somewhere in the registry... i wouldn't even know what to search for
it's nothing serious, i can live with FC auto start
