As my previous quote from the Help file states, that's the way Folder->Compare function was designed. I don't know if it's technically possible to make it work with one panel also, but I think you're the first one trying to achieve that.
I don't understand why you're trying to use Folder->Compare function using a single panel view?
And also why are you using a maximized single panel instead of View->Dual/one panel option? Just to have the splitter bar visible? You'll run into problems while doing so.
