I have the same problem. I can set a programm in Settings -> Programs -> Editors, but it doesn't work?!
My settings are (sorry, I can't paste a screen shot):
Filter: .txt (I also test it with: txt and *.txt)
Program: C:\Program Files\Notepad++\notepad++.exe
Parameters: %ActivSel ...
