I can partially confirm your results using default settings and enabling Link to file list as you described in your post.
A text file will only change the focus to the viewer if it has a UTF coding. ANSI Text files will not change focus.

Have several tabs in both panels. Add a column in one of the tabs, for example in the left panel. Cycle through the tabs in the left panel and all of them also have the new column.
