You "basically" can already, using "Color by file type" in:
Settings -> View -> File/Folder list -> Items color (tab) -> Color by file type
It will only color the file name text color, not the background (unfortunately. I wish it would - new request!)
It will retain it if you restart.

Wow, I just had this bug again in FreeCommander XE 2025 Build 920 [/u] 64-bit donor
I don't know what triggered it. I really struggled to restore the visibility of the folder tabs until I found this post.
I tried:
restarting, dual/single, horizontal/vertical panes, tree list on/off, favourites ...
